Description
Description:

The title means "Waxing Moon ~Final Chapter~ Perfect Edition." Gackt may not have released a new album last summer (he was busy working on the "Moon Child" movie, no doubt), but that didn't stop him from touring again this year. This means that there isn't a new album of music to feature on this tour, and therefore the song lineup will be somewhat similar to that of his previous tour DVD from 2002. However, new singles "kimi ga oikaketa yume" and "tsuki no uta" are included in this concert, as well as one new song that is yet to be released! A lot of the same songs as his last tour video are included here, but considering the addition of those new tracks, it isn't as bad as it could be.

The DVD includes Japanese, Chinese, and English subtitles, but you don't need to turn on the English ones. The subtitles are only used for the narrations in English at the beginning and the end of the video, so unless you're hearing-impaired it's just going to be displaying the same thing you're hearing on the screen. The total length of the DVDs is 140 minutes, which includes two bonus extras (birthday celebration for Gackt on stage and messages from the fans). Again, the concert is contained on two discs, but I'm not sure why they keep insisting it's necessary to use two discs instead of one. If you have seen his previous concert DVDs, you know the format. Gackt flipping off of a trampoline.

The concert has a hard rock start, including songs, "Noah", "Speed Master", and "Lu:na", from his most recent (and now fairly old) album, "MOON". Gackt is once again joined by a gang of backup dancers on stage who create a spectacular choreographed show, including gymnastic flips. Gackt himself gets into the action, showing that he too can perform some amazing acrobatics, flipping over on stage. At one point, the performers, including Gackt, launch themselves from a trampoline and flip over. This was a very impressive show that really got the audience going.

Gackt's singing is also dead-accurate from start to finish. He is one of the best stage performers in Jpop without question. It would be hard to assume he did not lip-synch some of the songs in this concert, considering the way he runs and dances around until he's breathless (some of the heavy breathing he does between songs is just for show, I assume) while maintaining perfect vocal performance, but at any rate he never misses a note. That rain machine really does its job!

As in last year's tour, once again the impressive rain machine that covers the entire front of the stage was used to create a dramatic mood during the performance of "rain". Considering how many gallons of water that thing must be using, and the impressive lighting shining onto the water, this is one of the most over-the-top expensive-looking effects I have ever seen in a concert. Even seeing it for the second time on this DVD was exciting. American music fans would be completely blown away by this level of concert production values. There is simply nothing else like it anywhere in the world.

After Gackt leaves the stage, his guitarists have themselves a little jamfest on stage, all the while the rain machine still running. Gackt comes back out for the second chapter of the concert and plays a lengthy vocal-less piano solo. This was actually a nice, relaxing change of pace from the rest of the concert. Gackt is a very good pianist. I also don't think we have ever heard the song he plays before. After this, he gets up and sings an all-new song titled "kimi ga matte iru kara" ("Because You are Waiting"). CD Japan tentatively has this listed as the title of his upcoming single in November, but it seems to be wrong. Crown Records' site lists his next single's title as "Last Song", and they have the cover art to prove it. At any rate, here we got our first peak at a new Gackt song that will likely be on his next album coming in December, if not on the single coming out before that. "kimi ga matte iru kara" is a moderate-tempo song with a very dramatic melody (of course). My initial impression of the song is that it is a bit repetitive and simple, though certainly not bad, but we will just have to wait and see. Gackt holds the actor that played him as a child as he lip-synchs along with him.

For the end of the second chapter, Gackt appears on stage wearing one of his costumes from the "Moon Child" movie and performs his latest single, "tsuki no uta".. The actor who played Gackt as a child in the movie also appears with him on stage. I wasn't sure how much I liked the tie-in between the movie and this concert, but there was more to come. Gackt did help write the movie after all, so the theme of the movie does seem to somehow fit into Gackt's grand story, which he simply calls "Moon". It looks as if Gackt is right in the middle of the crowd in this shot.

Chapter 3 was more or less the typical winding down "let's burn all the rest of our energy off before it's over" hard rock/singles portion of the concert. As in previous concerts, this chapter opens with crazy lights flashing on the stage as the guitar plays, leading the crowd in a cheer. Soon Gackt's voice is heard somewhere offstage hollering things at the audience to get them geared up. During the performance of "ANOTHER WORLD", Gackt gets off the stage and runs around close to the audience. He rarely gets near enough to the crowd for them to actually touch him, but his bodyguards were all over him and he was still certainly very much in the middle of the action of the crowd as he stood in the aisles. Of course this drove all the fans in the front rows completely nuts. They stop playing in the middle of "ANOTHER WORLD" and Gackt yells at the audience for a long time, trying to charge them up. As usual, this can get a little too long, and by the time it's over and they start playing again it feels like, "Oh yeah, we were in the middle of 'ANOTHER WORLD', weren't we?" Pure madness.

During the performance of "Soleil", Gackt is joined on stage by people in animal costumes, as the tradition dictates. This time he wasn't only joined by animals, but also men dressed in tutus!? It wouldn't be a Gackt concert without people dancing around in costumes. Gackt sings a duet with Wang Leehom.

It looks as if the concert is over at this point, but then they come back out and perform birdcage. Okay, now we're done, right? Wrong! Next Gackt is joined on stage by three actors from the "Moon Child" movie, including Wang Leehom, Zeny Kwok, and Taro Yamamoto. They then lip-synch a few of the lines from the movie. When one of them mentions Kei (HYDE's character from the movie) a surge of excitement comes up from the audience, as they speculate whether or not HYDE is really here. Wang Leehom and Gackt then perform a new version of "ORANGE no taiyou" (the theme song of "Moon Child", written by Gackt and HYDE). This version has a new arrangement, and verses not found in the movie. It was a rather stunning performance, and Wang and Gackt do a great job together. This is probably the only time you will see Wang Leehom sing in Japanese. This footage is interspersed with clips from the movie, of course. The rest of the cast then leaves Gackt alone on stage, and HYDE's voice is then heard singing the original version of the song on the stage's speakers. The crowd goes nuts because they are all thinking, "Oh my god! Is HYDE here?" Gackt joins in and sings with HYDE as he motions toward an empty spotlight next to him on stage. The ending narration then begins and the credits roll, HYDE having made no appearance. Gackt motions toward an empty spotlight.

I wonder why Gackt doesn't do his own voice overs for the narrations, rather than having some guy play him in English? I guess it just further adds to the mysticism of Gackt. It was very disappointing that they performed Gackt and HYDE's song at the ending, yet HYDE makes no appearance, especially since they really lead you on, making you believe the possibility that he really might be there. What a way to end it! However, it was still pretty cool to see him perform with Wang Leehom, who is a star in Taiwan in his own right. It would have been a grand entrance, had HYDE suddenly appeared out of nowhere at the ending though.

I realize there isn't a lot of new stuff here, compared with the previous concert, but what the hell, I'll give it a perfect rating. No one knows how to put on a show like Gackt! I realize that by doing this I run the risk of looking like a Gackt freak just like Tomo and Taku of J-Fan Cinema. Show this concert to your friends who don't really like Gackt, and it will change their minds.
